If I could pick one feature that takes your home from builder-grade to custom, it would be built-in shelving. They add so much character to a space! They’re also a great storage solution that doubles as a way to express your style.
We recently worked with a client to refresh their built-in bookshelves. As the main focal point in their living space, it was time to give the under-utilized shelving a much-needed refresh.
Our client’s goal was to refresh their built-in shelving to represent their love of unique design all while keeping it clean, yet cozy. They were in great condition, so a simple paint job, new hardware, and shelf styling were all that was needed.
This allowed us to select a color that would complement the other features of the room, including the terracotta fireplace surround. (which we did not want to bother with the expense of ripping out and replacing)
The first decision we had to make: paint color. My go-to site in helping make any paint selections is, Samplize. This site sends you large printed paint samples that allow you to better see the paint color, not to mention their shipping is beyond fast.
After ordering ours samples, we ended up using Cornwall Slate by Sherwin-Williams. It’s the perfect light sage that doesn’t have a “lime” tint.
This color also complements the terracotta tile so well! The tile is original to this 1970s build and found in multiple places throughout the home. So we were beyond excited when we realized this was the perfect selection that saved us some big bucks!
Additionally, we swapped out the hardware to something with a little more character to bring in gold accents that area also found throughout the home.
A rug is an easy way to add texture and character to any space, we added in this rug from Ruggable which helped pull in the gray sectional the client already had in this space.
If you have built-ins in your home that you’re struggling to style, consider these tips!
To add personality to your shelving while also keeping it aesthetically pleasing, use a mixture of store-bought and personal items. I love shopping at Target, Hobby Lobby, and on Amazon for low-cost pieces. From there, I’ll mix in family photos, souvenirs, and books that have sentimental meaning.
To keep things organized and to break up decor items, incorporate in a few baskets and bins. These are a favorite of mine! I love that they have lids to hide any chaos and can easily be stacked.
To avoid having your shelving look too perfect and uniform, utilize a mixture of heights and textures. Doing this will add depth to your shelves and make your styling look like it’s straight from a magazine!
