Mixing family heirlooms with all of my daughter’s favorite things.
First, I would like to say this is my inaugural blog post and I could not be more excited for this. Years ago I created a blog as a hobby & it was truly one of my prized possessions (until one day I did an update that I had not backed up properly and lost all my content – sore subject.) So needless to say I can not wait to get back into the creative space of writing all while using this as a place to share my ongoing client and home projects.
Winter of 2024 we welcomed a new baby girl into our family which meant it was time for big sister to move out of nursery and take over the guest bedroom. Our guest bedroom had always been a haven for the misc. house items that didn’t really have a place throughout the rest of home, but were also the kind of pieces I did not want to part with. I was determined to make them work in my daughters room hence why I went with an overall vintage theme, and not just “pretend” vintage items, actual pieces passed down from generation to generation.
This also came with a slight hurdle because both pieces were solid black and didn’t exactly represent my “pink loving, dancing, princess dress wearing, puppy dog crazy” little girl. Which, by the way when I asked her what she wanted in her room, those were the things she asked for. Pink. Dance. Princess. Dogs: To which I said “Hmm, alright then, Mommy will do her very best.” *insert nervous laughing emoji*
In order to make this room work I followed the process I use in my client’s decorating projects. Let’s get into it!
This helps us determine so many factors in the room, instead of working around these pieces, we work with them in order to make the room flow as smooth as possible.
I knew I was not about to paint all that black furniture so I needed to find a way to make it work. I then pulled in other black accents through the curtain rod & photo collage.
Normally, when working with a client I always inquire their likes and dislikes before the real fun happens. (Simple example: That way if a client absolutely can not stand the color blue, I don’t end up accenting with that color.) And the client in this case happens to be a very opinionated 3 year old so the stakes were high.
So how does one find princesses, pink, dancers, and puppy dogs all in one place? My answer is always going to be: art on Etsy.com. You name it, Etsy has a print of it.
The teacups are what lead me to select green to pair with the pink. The toy chest shown is my childhood toy chest which was once a bright yellow now painted (along with nightstand) in Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams.
Knowing what pieces I had to use along with the colors now it was time to piece together. This is where fun details such as adding new knobs, beadboard, pillows, rug, etc. all came in to play.
One rule I will always stress to my client: “DO NOT PANIC BUY” just because you have an area to finish does not mean you have to buy everything in one shopping trip. I would say that I collectively worked on gathering things for this room the minute I found out I was pregnant with #2 (may have waited until less than a month before she was due to actually put it together but that’s besides the point.)
In the end this room came together in a cozy, vintage, yet whimsical way that I was given a stamp of approval on from my toddler. Most importantly, it is a room filled with treasures that can grow with her as she gets older.

xoxo,
Morgan
